Towards Europe – with Georgian light-heartedness?
Georgian politicians adore European values in words, but sometimes their deeds and behavior give an impression of being disorganized. On Tuesday, the meeting with a respectable delegation from the Council of Europe at the Georgian parliament almost failed because the hosts were late and they were represented incompletely.
“There are no Ambassadors with higher ranks in the Council of Europe. They are known as the Group of Democratic Stability and they help the Georgian side inn every regards. The parliament should have hosted them appropriately. According to the protocol, Giga Bokeria was supposed to meet the delegation, but upon coming to the parliament it appeared that the Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs had gone to Gudauri to work on a draft work,“ Lana Ghoghoberidze, the representative of Georgia in the European Union, could not conceal her frustration because of inattentiveness, irresponsibility or negligence of some MPs.
Giorgi Arveladze, the Secretary General of the National Movement, partially managed to save the Georgian side from this awkward situation. He came in to the meeting 10 minutes late and with Elene Tevdoradze’s help returned already ready-to-leave delegation back to the hall. After this, two more MPs showed up and the meeting with the monitoring group of Ambassadors of the Council of Europe member states, headed by the representative of Switzerland in the Council of Europe, Jean Claude Joseph, was saved from cancellation.
According to Arveladze, the talks were mainly about the legislative incentives that are currently being discussed in the parliament of Georgia. These were initiatives about the draft law on Broadcasting and amendments to the Election Code, which implies staffing of election administrations according to one’s professionalism.
“The main directive of the monitoring group, which we agree with, was that we should cooperate with European structures while discussing these sorts of draft laws,” this was the summary of Giorgi Arveladze.
